The WELL: Take me through your journey to entrepreneurship.

Dr. Tara: Initially, I served as a director for a nonprofit program. After completing my graduate program, I recognized a gap in training and understanding of trauma in academic settings. Armed with data reflecting these challenges, I felt compelled to bridge this gap. While on maternity leave with my 11-year-old daughter, Lola, I realized I couldn't return to the traditional work model. Supported by the Executive Director, I transitioned into consultancy.

The WELL: To whom or what do you credit for your longevity?

Dr. Tara: GOD. My faith and relational approach have sustained and expanded by business. My dedicated team shares my vision and picks up the slack when needed. Valuing people fuels our longevity.

The WELL: Could you share your challenges and successes over your 10-year entrepreneurial journey?

Dr. Tara: In the beginning, I underestimated the complexity of entrepreneurship. I juggled various roles, from natural hair stylist to adjunct professor, to make ends meet. Learning to be an entrepreneur was a pivotal moment. I undercharged for services initially, but invaluable advice from peers, friends, and clients prompted me to adjust my pricing to reflect its actual value. Collaborating with my mother and a close friend, delegating tasks, and establishing partnerships helped me grow.

The WELL: When did your connection with The WELL begin?

Dr. Tara: After participating in the Goldman Sachs program, I discovered The WELL through a newsletter. Unlike other programs with set timelines, The WELL offered ongoing support. I attended an interest session in 2019 and was drawn to the members and their relatable stories. I connected deeply with Nakeia and the cultural understanding of Black women's entrepreneurship in the group.

The WELL: What has the WELL's role been in your sustainability and scalability?

Dr. Tara: During COVID, The WELL provided stability during uncertain times without offering false hope. It became a dependable foundation, helping us navigate unprecedented challenges. My connection with The WELL has led to partnerships with NBC, Telemundo, and the State of Minnesota. It has been instrumental in the growth of Sage Wellness. The WELL expands support, fostering personal growth and lifelong friendships. Collaboration and problem-solving are at its core.

The WELL: Do you have any advice for Black women in business and emerging entrepreneurs?

Dr. Tara: Balance and boundaries are possible. Collaborate and find allies among fellow Black women entrepreneurs. Safeguard your time, allocate time for working on and working in your business, and nurture your creativity by spending one day per quarter making decisions in nature because you cannot be around creation and not be a creator.

The WELL: How does it feel to celebrate ten years in business?

Dr. Tara: Surreal, yet deeply gratifying. Manifesting relationships and nurturing a culture aligned with my values is a testament to faith. Embracing challenges, pivoting, and investing in self has been transformational. And, I know that I'm not even scratching the surface.

The WELL congratulates Dr. Tara Doaty on ten years of entrepreneurship. Her story is still being written. Stay tuned!
